Most speedos now have been rebuilt and to justify the money for the rebuild a new speedo face sticker is attached. Many of the new faces have no numbers or a wrong number is stuck on by the repairer as he doesnt have the vast array of stickers necessary. I have a couple of chronometric speedos on Ariels with the wrong numbers but they still display the correct speed. There is another number that some chronometrics have which represents the number of turns of the speedo cable per mile.

Dear All, Our lovely Smiths chronometric speedometer was sent away to London Instruments (London SE20 8RY) for a service/overhaul before being fitted back into the bike in time for its MOT. Can't personally help with the number [glad you supplied it though] and will pass the question onto others for, hopefully an answer. What I can say is that the 'D' shaped speedo was used on the BSA C10L [250cc side valve single] and the BSA C15T [250cc ohv single] and I think on one of the BSA Bantam models.

The easiest method to accomplish this is to place a 3/16' wide flat bladed screwdriver under the dial - place it between the brass top plate of the chronometric movement and twist the blade in such a way that the side of the blade closest to the needle shaft is forced up against the dial - Oh! - remove the 4 dial screws first won't you? The needle will shoot across the room scare the cat and be lost forever so don't forget to put your finger on the needle to prevent 'feline agro' now you can replace the movement into the case and apply pressure to the reset shaft from inside the case in order to replace the 12 BA screw - the head of which should be flush with the reset knob sleeve - to prevent the screw head gouging out the alloy of the case in that area Please be careful with this reset shaft - none of the other models of this type - i.e. 3' - have a tapped hole for the tiny screw - they are just plane holes for the tiny split pin and all shafts are hardened - easily and often broken.
Spray with 3 & 1 oil or light gun oil all moving parts, allow excess to drain, clean away excess. I've also simply applied a tiny drop of clock oil to every moving part -- but the spray method is easier.

The objective is to remove the bezel without distorting or destroying the beauty chrome. The bezels on most speedos and tachs are quite thin, and usually made of brass. Brass plates well, requiring no copper, so the bezels are normally nickel plated, then beauty chromed. The best way to remove the bezel without damage takes a couple of days.

The larger 3” instrument was of the Chronometric type. This in reality is a two in one clock a speed recorder and a distance recorder. The speed is calculated by the same principle as used in clocks and watches which gives very accurate readings. The distance is calculated by a series of gears and ratios which move the numbers round.
A magnet which is close to a metal disc is rotated by the drive cable and “drags” the disc round with it. A pointer is fixed to the disc which shows the speed on a dial. A hair spring retains the disc from revolving freely.
These also come in two variations, each fitting to the specific connection on the speedometer. The Jeager drive cables consisted of an approximately 3 mm diameter inner flex which ran through a rubber covered steel outer flex with a. Mm 11 inner diameter. The picture shows the Jeager type (large diameter) cable/connection. The later cables are basically modern cables as still used today. Blaupunkt user manual. The bottom part of both cable types consists of a spade like protrusion which is fitted in the gearbox and secured with a nut. The top part of the cable is either a tube, fitted over the Jeager drive or a square deformed end of the inner cable which slides up into the speedometer connection and screwed tight.
Any blow on the bezel without this protection will inevitably cause chrome luster loss due to abrasion. The next step is to mount the instrument securely so the bezel can be removed. The Shadow speedo can easily be mounted in a vise with the mounting plate still attached. The Rapide speedo can be mounted as well in a vise, leaving the mounting plate attached. The trouble with a strap wrench is that the cam action required to tighten causes a hard pressure point on the circumference of the bezel at the point of the cam action.

It pays to clean and regrease the small gearbox on the rear - I've had shards of metal in the two gears there cause erratic flicking. Return to smooth operation by doing this. The grease was ancient and more like tar.
Mount the instrument so that it is as near horizontal for the built in antenna to pick up the satellite signal 2. Insert a fresh set of batteries in the instrument 3. When measuring your speed try to travel in a straight line 4. Measure your speed only when travelling at a constant speed 5. Don't do anything dangerous and then blame me because I presume you are smart enough not to mount the GPS so that its difficult to see and not try reading it in dangerous traffic situations.

The 30MPH bar on speedos of this era was yellow-coloured. A substantial proportion of the instruments that turn up are ex-WD (they were fitted from 1936-on) and these are 80 MPH, non illuminated, non trip so not really suitable. Hello, I have recent sold my1936 model CS1 which had instrument Panel in tank. The wiring and speedo; judging by their very UNDISTURBED state were original, as confirmed by Norton's specification records as the previous response mentioned. This was indeed a 120MPH Cronometric (no illumination) driven from the front wheel. It did not have a yellow marker but a white one at the 30MPH level but this may have bleached over the years. It was a two owner job that I bought back from Australia.
Place the ring compressor over the bezel, lining up the bottom of the bezel with the bottom of the ring compressor ratchet tightening band. Now tighten the ring compressor. The ratchet portion of the ring compressor protrudes out about a half an inch, and provides a surface that can be tapped on with a rawhide mallet. The tapping acts like an impact wrench, and breaks the bezel loose with ease. If the bezel turns with difficulty it's usually because you have the ring compressor too tight. Loosen, and the bezel can be removed with no problem, and if you use this method zero damage will be incurred. Replace the instrument in the penetrant bath and wait until morning. Remove and dry the instrument. Wrap the outer circumference of the bezel three times with 1/2' masking tape. With a rawhide mallet you can now tap lightly around the circumference of the bezel. As the brass bezel is thin and relatively soft, the rawhide's light blow easily disturbs the female and male threads, and loosens any corrosion grip.

However it would be nice to get something more accurate. I know I can get the instrument recailbrated by the likes of Speedy Cables etc but I thought I would first see if there is a generic speedo which would be suitable. My present model has the following on it SN 6144 2685 1280 and I assume the final 4 figures are the revs per mile.

Don't tap on the bezel's glass flange, especially with the gasket removed. It only takes a slightly enthusiastic blow with a mallet to cause the bezel to jump thread, thereby causing a cross threading of the bezel. The masking tape protects the beauty chrome from damage.
Jumpstart 3d virtual world the legend of grizzly mcguffin mechanical supply. JumpStart 3D Virtual World is a sub-series of the larger JumpStart series of educational games. It was originally titled JumpStart World. The series contains 4 games: JumpStart 3D Virtual World: My First Adventure (originally JumpStart Advanced Premium Preschool World). JumpStart 3D Virtual World: The Legend of Grizzly McGuffin (originally JumpStart World Kindergarten). I completely agree with other reviewers of Jumpstart's 3D Virtual World: The Legend of Grizzly McGuffin in that the company does not do a good enough job warning consumers that the CD is really a sample of the game requiring a subscription. This alone has people infuriated,. There is nothing more exciting than following in the footsteps of a legend. Come to camp to discover the legend of Grizzly McGuffin and play outrageously fun games in an amazing 3D virtual world where there are new adventures to be discovered every day! Features: Sprint around Dinosaur Raceway; Run, jump, and swim through the 3D virtual world.

Here's just one, but if you Search the forum for 'Calibration' or 'Speedo' you'll find the others. I'll just comment that I thought the turns-per-mile number was under the odometer - I don't know if it is also part of what looks more like a serial or part number. You might check with the other(!) If you were to connect a multimeter - select AC Volts - to this pickup and the body of the magneto you would be able to record a voltage that is directly proportional to the speed of the magneto. Unfortunately the voltage is in Alternating Currant - AC - form and will require a full wave rectifier so that a standard Direct Currant - DC - voltmeter can be used. Select a suitable rugged vibration resistant voltmeter.
